Dreams of Andalusia

Hebrew, Spanish and Arabic music from the Golden Age of Spain

Medieval Spain was an incredible melting pot of culture - ordinary people and rulers from the three monotheistic religions shared the Iberian Peninsular in comparative peace and tolerance. Andalusia is a word of many connotations - originally from the Arabic al 'andalus meaning land of the Wandalun or Vandals, it now refers both to a culture that originated in Muslim Spain that was subsequently developed in the courts of North Africa as well as to the name of the southern Spanish region today.

Following research in Jerusalem, Casablanca, Marrakech and Santiago, Belinda Sykes/Joglaresa have assembled a programme that includes songs by medieval Spanish-Hebrew poets, Arab-Andalusian poets and Christian songs from the court of Alfonso el Sabio.
